About the Book

In The Care Of Evil is a compelling account of the brutal experiences that a group of foster children and handicapped men encounter in a foster home located on Chicago’s south side. After surviving the drug dealing, bootlegging, and prostitution, which took place in their parent’s home, Vernon, Valerie, and Vincent are placed in the care of Bessie Mae and J.D. Willingham, along with numerous other foster children by the state of Illinois.

Vincent is one of the many foster children who is brutally beaten at the hands of J.D. Willingham with the use of a long brown extension cord. Because of a virtually uncontrollable bedwetting problem, Vincent dreads getting beatings on a daily basis. His brother, Vernon, leaves this foster home because of the greed and abuse.

The home is very unsanitary, infested with such filth as rats, waterbugs, fly maggots, and cockroaches, the food is inedible, and J.D. Willingham proves to be extremely abusive. First, he rapes Valerie, one of his foster daughters, and then he pushes his limits and continues the cycle of abuse by impregnating another one of his foster daughters, which took place several years after the rape.

His wife, Bessie Mae, suspects that her husband is guilty of both rape and child molestation, but because of her unconditionally blinding love for him, she tries to ignore his sinnister deeds. But until the one foster daughter comes forward and reveals that she has given birth to the baby that J.D. fathered, Bessie Mae finally comes to her senses and confronts him for taking advantage of the two foster girls. Bessie Mae suffers a fatal stroke from all the years of deception that was perpetrated by J.D. The appropriate child care services are contacted and the Willingham’s notorious foster parenting home is finally put out of business. For Vincent, the one foster child who remained at the home, he no longer have to tolerate the abuse. The tumultuous lives of these foster children and handicapped men have been skillfully captured with this novel, In The Care Of Evil.

About the Author

Dewey Reynolds was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. At six months old, he was abandoned by both parents who were involved with criminal activities. After his abandonment, he was left in foster care and became a permanent ward of the state. Years following his release from foster care, Mr. Reynolds attended a community college and decided to research the history of foster care in America. He found some statistics that were absolutely startling. The extremities of abuse that he read about in foster care were very similar to the same abuse that he suffered at the hands of his brutal foster parents. With careful preparation and endless research, Mr. Reynolds has written a disturbing and provocative story about the misuse of sex and power within the foster care system. In The Care Of Evil offers insight into the complex world of one foster child. Dewey Reynolds currently resides in Kansas City, Missouri.
