About the Book

Seven plays and seventeen solo plays and dramatic monologues—some of which may be combined to make longer plays—designed for the church. Featured characters include Abraham; Adam, Eve, and a surprising Serpent; John Donne; Joseph, the father of Jesus; King David; Lot’s Wife; Mary Magdalene; Noah; Saints Paul and Peter; Saul; The Prodigal Son, Elder Brother, and Father. Includes a chapter on “Developing and Performing Solo Plays and Dramatic Monologues.” The title play is a dramatization of Loren Eiseley’s short story. Boxes focuses on the topic of bereavement. There is a play for the Annunciation and a no-rehearsal Children’s Christmas Play.

About the Author

Robert John Versteeg has been Director of Drama at Louisburg (North Carolina) College and Director of the Conservatory Acting Company at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Professional School of Theatre. He has acted and directed professionally. He received the Betty Smith Award for Best Original Play and a Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study experimental theatre throughout the United States. A United Methodist minister who has twice received international awards for his preaching, Bob has performed his solo chancel dramas for more than 200 churches and on television. He is a frequent contributor to religious, dramatic, and literary journals.
