About the Book

Nineteen year-old Newt was a drifter who received a map of a gold mine that was located in the Sonora Desert in Northern Mexico. An old prospector, Zeke, had presented him the map and offered him a partnership if he agreed to develop the mine. Alone, with few belongings, except for his horse and a tiny burro he blindly ventured on his quest to locate the mine. He was surprised to discover that Zeke had sent him into Mexico for purposes other than developing the gold mine. Upon reaching his destination, he found himself at a remote ranch that was owned by Carlos and his, non-traditional, small family. It was at Rancho de Oro that he met Conchita, the sixteen year-old daughter of Carlos. His old friend Zeke, and Carlos, had contrived to send him to the ranch for the deliberate purpose of helping Carlos with his activities, and possibly as a love-interest for the hot-blooded Conchita. The romance and adventures that evolved caused the youthful Newt to assume responsibilities that were overwhelming and consuming. In his exploits he met---- Maria, the predatory, deviate, wife of Carlos and mother of Conchita. Red Horse, the English speaking leader of a small band of Apaches, who lived in a village near the ranch. Numi, the wife of Red Horse. Carla, a sensuous Mexican nurse, who nursed Newt back to health following an ordeal in the desert. Jabali, a native Opata renegade that plagued the area with violence and diabolical schemes. With Conchita, he faced the challenges, and received much more than gold for his efforts.
