About the Book
At the age of twelve Chuck Hawkins and Grover Jones tried hoboing their way west, only to have their attempt aborted by a railroad bull the size of the Biblical Goliath. At the age of seventeen they tried again, and made it. This time as legitimate passengers on the Union Pacific. Landing in Las Cruces, New Mexico, they set out to find jobs as cowboys on nearby ranches, only to find the jobs already taken.
Then they met Solomon S. Whitehead. He offered them jobs of pushing a herd of "prime stock" north to Reed's Fort, Montana (later named Lewistown.) Riding into Whitehead's camp aboard two haymows, they were surrounded by bleating, smelly sheep. The boys smelled a rat.
They set out north for Reed's Fort in the company of two hundred mangy sheep, one packmule, two crowbaits that appeared to want death, and one Border Collie, named Joe, who would prove to know more than both of them would ever learn. They were prepared, or resigned, to do the job.
