About the Author

Harold Hakwon Sunoo was born on Feb. 2, 1918 in Pyongyang. On August, 1938, he came to the United States to meet his grandfather, Tom Sunoo, who came to the USA in 1904. Harold married Helen Sonia Shinn on Feb. 6, 1943 in San Francisco. He has two sons and three grandchildren live in Los Angeles. Harold received a bachelor’s degree from Pasadena College in 1942, his master’s degree from University of Washington, Seattle, Washington in 1945, and his doctorate degree from the National University of Czechoslovakia, Prague in 1950. He further studies at Stanford University in post-doctorate program. He also attended at London School of Economics of the University of London. He taught at the University of California, Berkeley, 1943-44, at University of Washington, 1944-49, at the Charles University, Prague, 1949-50, and at Yonsei University, Seoul, 1961-62, and at Central Methodist College, MO, from 1963-89, and at New York city University, 1973-75. He also served as the Editor-in-Chief at the Korean Herald Daily News in Seoul in 1961. While he was teaching at Central Methodist College, he became the Chairman of the Division of Social Sciences, and also distinguished professor of Political Science and History. He was actively engaged in Korean democratic and unification movement in America. He organized and conducted the Korean unification symposium for 15 years and also organized and led the dialogue between Oversea Koreans and north Koreans for ten years. He has written and published 20 plus books in English, Korean, Japanese, and French including 20th Century Korea, America’s Dilemma in Asia, and 50 years of relationship between the USA and Korea, Search for Freedom: A story of Korean-American, and Korean Democracy and Unification Movement.
