About the Book

Callie was in the bedroom, on her hands and knees straightening the shoes on her closet floor, when the phone rang. Thinking it was Brad calling to tell her when he would be coming home, she stood and rushed to answer it. In her haste she didn’t see Patches, their kitty, and she tripped over her, and again over a pile of discarded shoes. She tried to right herself, but instead she caused herself to fall flat on the bedroom floor, with her left leg caught under her. She struck her forehead on the corner of the leg of the bed, and her right shoulder on the cedar chest. She lay stunned, and although she could hear the phone ringing dimly, she could not get her thoughts together quickly enough to get up and answer it. The phone was abruptly silent. She lay still and tried to clear her mind by shaking her head, however the pain that struck her was so terrible that she realized she was losing cosciousness. When she next came to her senses, the pain was so horrible that she heard herself scream, when she tried to move. “Never had she had such pain,” she thought. “What have I done to myself.”
