Does God still speak to us?

Evelyn Bergstrom’s short answer is “yes, but only one word at a time.”

Her long answer is a small book entitled Inklings, a series of essays that originated from a mystical meditation experience in which she was “given” a single, potent, urgent word — always just one word — to ruminate upon. God was speaking, albeit cryptically, in single, compelling words that demanded special attention. And her response to these mysterious word-gifts has resulted in this book.

Inklings is an outgrowth of the author’s habit of journaling, a practice she adopted to write her way through both good and bad times in order to use life’s happenings to grow spiritually through the years. The book intersperses meditative musings with poems, interweaves etymological research with anecdotes, sprinkles biblical references into personal experiences, and links the prosaic with the profound. It is an intriguing ramble through both thorns and roses, always acknowledging the challenge of keeping faith alive and growing despite the vicissitudes of life.

This meditative memoir is written for spiritual seekers to find encouragement, to embrace both the reality and mystery of their own pilgrimages toward God, and to ponder their own stories, perhaps in a new light. Although written by a Christian author, it embraces a wide spirituality from other traditions and stimulates a cosmic awareness of the holiness of all creation.

Above all, Inklings is an approachable book, not a didactic tome. By simple and direct observations, it endeavors to lead readers gently to their own responses to the holy in the everyday, to a place where they can envision their common life pervaded by a new dimension of spirituality.
