About the Book
This is a memoir novel in fictionalized narrative about an African -American coping with changes and finding his place in the world. Its main setting is a place called Sandusky, Ohio in the 1950-80’s The author masterly discuss the concepts of religion and western philosophy in a spelling gripping way. The main character grows while exposing character flaws, and internal conflicts common to the human condition. It offers an critical insider’s view of the Jehovah Witnesses in the 1950- 60’s.
The characters are brilliantly realized and vividly portrayed. The scenes are detailed enough, the problems real enough and the dialogue believable enough, the pages turn quickly. Right from the first page, the readers are intimately involved. There are humor and social observations that are fresh and original. The pathos of African American culture is dissected exposing phases, terms, customs and practices not known by many.
It is remarkable how Dr. Alexander integrated such well known events and names as the murder of Emmett Till, the March on Washington., the rise of Dr. Martin King, et al in his novel.
The theme is how people give away power by what they believe and to people they trust. To question them is also part of the human condition, thereby is the conflict.
