About the Book

Spanning from 1948 to Angelita’s death in 2002, The Heart of the Watermelon is the anticipated sequel to The Season for Watermelon’s, the family saga of Angelita Ortega and her request to forge a new life for herself and her only daughter, Fina. It is 1948. A passionate woman with a traditional heart, Angelita breaks the barriers of La Obedencia as her wanderlust spirit leads her and three-year-old Fina across the Texas border to America. Filled with hope and determination, Angelita seeks to live her dreams of independence, opportunity, and abundance in the United States, but can she realize them while meeting the expectations of her new homeland? And how will this new culture shape little Fina? What new truths might this foreign land reveal through her child’s eyes? Delphine Salas Martinson writes candidly about her immigrant experience, immersing her readers in a humorous, poignant and often bittersweet account of life with her mother, the incorrigible Angelita.
