About the Book

Revolutionary War Battle of Brooklyn (Battle of Long Island) is the story of the battle fought in 1776 on what is now the Borough of Brooklyn in the city of New York, also known as the Battle of Long Island. It was the first battle of the Revolutionary War fought by the newly formed American Army. A decisive defeat for the Americans it was, notwithstanding, the battle that enabled the revolution to continue because, although defeated, the American forces were not destroyed as the British had hoped and continued to engage the British until ultimate victory was achieved and independence obtained. The American Army escaped destruction by a combination of luck and the initial skill of Washington in accomplishing a withdrawal of his defeated army in the middle of a foggy night across the East River.
