About the Book
Juan McCarthy (1866-1931)
My wife and I have been thinking about publishing my grandfather Juan McCarthy’s poems for the last 20 years. We did not have a clue as to how to approach this endeavor or how much it would cost.
My niece, Jenna McCarthy Coito, a renowned writer and author, advised us on publishing the poems and also helped with the layout and comments for the final drafts.
My wife’s niece, Lauren Yarnell, meticulously re-typed all the poems from Juan’s original “manual typewriter.” She verified the verbage of the Old English which Juan used throughout his work. We decided that no changes should be made to any of the words or the basic formatting. Every poem is authentic. Lauren also was instrumental in preparing the graphics used for the book covers, working with photos that were over 80 years old.
My wife, Linda, has been a true inspiration with her research, perseverance and dedication to this project. Together Linda and I read all of the poems and became more and more enthralled with this amazing and dedicated man.
"When Thou Art Gone"depicts the poet´s eulogy of an honorable man. The touching final moments as a young man says goodbye to his sweetheart are movingly illustrated in "The Sailor´s Farewell".
Grandfather put his life on the line daily while ministering to those in need. He opened a field in the territory of missions, one of the wildest places in the Argentine Republic, where the majority of the inhabitants were Indians and spoke the Guarani language. He ministered by horseback through the jungles. My father often shared his incredible stories about our grandfather, and now we are honored to share them with you, in his own words.
Our goal has never been personal gain; we intend to utilize any profit in support of missions around the world.
With my family´s support and enthusiasm, I am proud to present Poetry on Horseback, Volumes I and II. We hope you find his poetry as moving and timeless as we do.
By John Milton McCarthy,his grandson

The Venerable Juan McCarthy was born on April 25, 1866 in London, England. He was the father of eight brilliant children born in several parts of South America and Cuba. He received the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees before earning a Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity degrees from Lincoln and Jefferson University; He served as Foreign Missionary on behalf of the Baptist Church for 19 years in South America and ten years in Cuba; ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church, October, 1920; consecrated a priest by Bishop Hiram Hulse, June 1921; May, 1927, became Archdeacon in charge of Cuban Work, remaining in this position until his death at age 65. He spoke Guarani Indian as well as the native Spanish dialects. He was able to learn each language in two months. Grandfather hand wrote his poems on horseback while traveling from village to village preaching God’s word. His poems are all spiritual and inspirational. His wife, Louisa, was always very supportive of his ministry to God and his fellow man. He hand built and supervised construction of all missions, schools and churches. He, himself, was a mason and carpenter. Our grandparents have bestowed their strong and admirable convictions unto their four generations of proud McCarthys. These collective poems are a testament to forty-five years of his faithful ministry to God, his Master. Author of Poetry on Horseback Volume I
