Eastern Waves, Western Shores is a novel based on the life of a Sri Lankan woman who comes to study in England and then moves back to Sri Lanka and struggles fitting back in. The expectation of the elders, of society in general, cultural norms and the demands on a modern day career woman overwhelm her. She is torn between her loyalty to her family and the dreams she has for herself. It is a book about a looming arranged marriage, the yearning of young woman to fall in love hopefully with someone that is acceptable to her and her family, to live away from the family feuds and land disputes, away from the "dictatorship" of elders vs her duties towards them. Even after following her heart and her dreams she feels tormented sometimes and seeks an equilibrium in America.

About the Author

Chathuri Nugawela is originally from Sri Lanka. She holds a LL.B with honors from the University of NewCastle Upon Tyne, U.K. and lives in Maryland, United States. She is a Wife and Mother and likes to write in her spare time drawing on her experiences from the countries she has travelled to and lived in and people she has met.

" The moment I heard about the book I was determined to read it since I?ve read Chathuri's articles and short stories before.

'Eastern Waves Western Shores' is a story of a young woman named ?Parami? who experiences social and emotional conflicts under a framework of family expectations, love, relationships, and culture shock.

A life which revolves around the family both immediate and extended, the decisions she had to take on her education and career path, the struggles and limitations that she had to go through when adapting to different cultures, were carefully and boldly expressed using subtle humor and simple, expressive language.

The magic was the magnetic cohesion of the book bore till the end. I could not wait till I get the book, and I could not wait till I finished reading it. I closed the book with a sigh, tears in my eyes and a heavy heart.

The important lesson taught here is that at the end nothing would stay. Race, color, cast will disappear and will be of no value. All the material possessions which everyone fights for will come to an end. Loved ones may leave without letting know. Arguments will end.

But somewhere somehow, East or West, the life will go on, as a mother, a daughter or as a woman; an embodiment of courage, tolerance and most of all an unconditional love!

Some way or the other, in this book you and I live. Do read it. You will love it.

"Eastern Waves, Western Shores the fiction written and published by Chathuri Nugawela is an important literary endeavor undertaken by a young Sri Lankan woman writer. She has shown that she is a powerful new voice of the new generation. The story, a family saga unravels the social and cultural history of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Sri Lanka, mainly focusing on the Kandyan gentry and the changing society. Sri Lankan born women novelists who write in English are not many. Consequently, this novel tells us a story of the social, and economic decline of the gentry, tragedy of creating family tensions over inherited land and property that pulls families apart, painful changes and challenges Parami's family faces, due to social change as well as the emergence of the intellectual, affluent, educated classes as a result of the country's free education and democracy, and the technological advances in modern Sri Lanka. The story reminds me of Martin Wickremasinghe's classic novel ""Gamperaliya"" written in 1944, that depicts the breakup of the traditional village life due to rapid social change during the first half of the twentieth century. ""Eastern Waves and Weastern Shores"" reflects the change that occurred during the second half of the twentieth century.

The author with Parami as the first-person narrator, captures vividly the transformation of Parami's life, defining in vivid detail that opens whole worlds of emotion and penetrating insight, with conflicting loyalties, painfully coming to define herself. The complexity of Parami's challenges is apparent in her conflicting thoughts, carrying the burden of her heritage, trying to be a dutiful daughter to her family that firmly upholds old traditions and Buddhist thought, and her modern thinking that made those traditions look so obsolete. "I first heard of the book Eastern waves Western shores from a comment made on Facebook. I bought the book out of curiosity. I knew Chathuri from school.

It was a book hard to put down . I finished the book within one and half days.loved Chathuri's writing style. The book is full of sarcasm,passion and and most importantly mother's courage and fathers love to their children which touched my heart.

I cried ,smiled, laughed reading the book. Read and re read some paragraphs some experience was similar to my younger days.

I relived the younger days of my own life. In my opinion most Sri Lankan women in my era went through the experience the main character go through in her book. Today I am a mother and a wife and most importantly I live in a foreign country Chathuri has addressed the challenges we face everyday very sensitively. Well done Chathuri
