About the Book

About the Author

As the author approached his 80th year he felt impelled to make sense of what he has lived through.  This memoir is his story of the people he has loved and cared for and who have loved and card for him.  These are the same people - wife, parents, brother, ants, uncles, cousins and friends - with whom he has experienced everything from mild disagreement to abrasive conflict.  This recount is a portrait of normal family life - joyful, painful and complicated.

Writing  The author is not a professional writer. There were times that what come out on paper was a burst of memory that had been surpressed for many a year.  Wasserman writes about the world he has lived in from the days of the depression to the current problems and trouble we are embroiled in now here in our own country and in distant lands.

What does it mean to be a Jewish American brought up in a small town in Ohio?  What are the mental burdens of a non-practicing Jew who resisted the idea of a Supreme Being but still wanted to be tied to Judaism emphasizing moral and ethical behavior?

As a social worker and a teacher of social work the author writes about what he thinks are the main values and promises of the profession.  He illustrates his beliefs about social work by giving examples of the learning process he and his students engaged in.

Harry A. Wasserman was born in Lyria, Ohio in 1921.  His father was a tailor and haberdasher. Mother was a housewife and a helper in the store.  Sidney, his brother, lives in England.  He too is a social worker and Teacher.
