About the Book

This novel is about choosing rules for life. Chief Judge Green must decide whether he can reconcile the law with the idealism of his wife, Emily, and whether, because of a youthful mistake, he should resign from the state Supreme Court. His law clerk, Sally Link, must decide whether to accept an offer from a powerful law firm or help the man she loves run a rehabilitation center for alcoholics. The novel raises questions, central to current political debate, about legal education, lawyers' ethics, and the role of the courts.
