About the Book
The book is based on a true story from the life of my grandmother—embellished with the setting moved to July 4. Hannah is almost ready to start school, and she is feeling independent, as she is allowed to go to town without her mother for the first time. She meets two little girls her age who later tease her, bringing tears, and Hannah’s decision to walk home. She becomes lost and is found and rescued then returned to her family the next day. The time is around 1893, and the nature of the little girl reminded me of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House stories.
About the Author
My grandmother married and raised twelve children in North Dakota. I had the special privilege of being the first daughter born to one of her daughters, and she found time to share this story with me. I then asked for it when we made our twice-a-year visits. I am now a retired RN, grandmother of ten, and great-grandmother of twelve, and I had the desire to preserve the story for them and all little girls named Hannah. Doing disaster work after retiring from nursing, I served one deployment in North Dakota where I was born. I love to see children learn new things, so I used these events—including the parade. I know that it also opens the door for parents to teach children about personal responsibility.
