With Constable McIntyre escaping on his horse and both Constable Lonigan and Constable Scanlon dead Sergeant Kennedy was left to surrender or fight. Kennedy chose the latter, exchanging gunfire with Ned Kelly before Dan Kelly advanced causing Kennedy to retreat further into the bush. Ned followed and as Kennedy stopped behind another tree to return fire Ned shot him in the armpit causing him to drop his revolver. Kennedy, wounded and now unarmed staggered a short distance before turning to surrender. Unaware that Kennedy had dropped his revolver, Ned fired again with the bullet passing through the right side of his chest. Ned Kelly said that Kennedy appeared to be suffering and in great agony. Not wishing to leave him alone to linger out in such pain, Ned reloaded his firearm, placed the barrel up against Kennedy’s chest and fired. Ned went back to the police camp to get Sergeant Kennedy’s rain cloak which he placed over the body as a sign of respect.

Many people know the name Ned Kelly but don't know the story that led to his last stand at Glenrowan or his execution at the Old Melbourne Gaol. The author has attempted to retell the story by simply connecting the events of the day with images of places and items that still exist today. The book begins with the marriage of Ned Kelly’s parents in 1850 and ends with Ned’s execution in 1880. In between are all the significant events of his life, including the police murders, the audacious robberies, and Ned’s vision for a republic of North-Eastern Victoria. It is the ideal book for anyone who has an interest in Australian history or who wants to know more about Ned Kelly’s significance to Australia.
About the Author
Jack Peterson is a Ned Kelly enthusiast who lives in Melbourne, Australia. Peter has spent a lifetime researching, exploring, and photographing the country, relics, and structures that are relevant in demonstrating the historical significance of Ned Kelly’s life and the legendary status he is known for in Australia. Peter developed his photography skills through repetitive hands-on experience and research. Peter has traveled extensively throughout Victoria and New South Wales, capturing a sound collection of photographs. He is currently working on creating and developing another two books in addition to this book. Although he is a hard worker with a good education, Peter puts his accomplishments down to being a good father and husband. He puts a lot of emphasis on life experience as much as academic achievements but is mostly self-taught in his ability to create. When he is not out on the road researching or taking photographs, Peter spends his time with family, caring for his pets, sketching, and painting.
