Bye-Bye Nanny is a wonderful book. Told in a simple and straightforward style that even the youngest toddler will be able to understand. Bye-Bye Nanny addresses the strong and complicated feelings that a child may have upon learning that a loved caregiver has left or will be leaving. I have not seen any other children’s story tackle this issue, and reading Bye-Bye Nanny made me realize what a hole there has been in children’s literature given the absence of such a book. Separation and loss comprise fundamental issues of children’s lives—all of our lives really. But children have very real life-or-death dependency upon caregivers, and they lack the life experience and abstract thinking that make departures more comprehensible to adults. Thus, for children, losses and departures are rendered all the more poignant and painful. Bye-Bye Nanny is written to help children cope with separation. It tells the story of a boy who loses his beloved babysitter and who contends with a multitude of feelings in response—sadness, anger, and the simultaneous desire to possess and reject the one who he will miss so profoundly. The book’s honest depiction and acceptance of his strong and, at times, conflicting emotions will no doubt come as a great comfort to the many children who lose babysitters and who must grapple with comparable feelings. I would strongly recommend this book to all parents who wish to help their children negotiate this difficult life circumstance.
