Ability to Work with an Evolving Digital Ecosystem Gone are the days of working with a specific team/teams or vendor(s) throughout the entire project life cycle to deliver a project. Changing market demands force the projects to pivot their approach along the project life cycle, necessitating the PMs to quickly on-board new skill sets and potentially new teams as needed. Given the dynamic market changes, there is a high probability that PMs in the digital era are expected to manage complex vendor (a.k.a. partner) engagements and combine their deliverables with the internal project team’s outcomes whilst continuing to manage changing stakeholder expectations and needs. Also, PMs are expected to have an overview of the organisational strategy so that they can deliver customer value through their project whilst considering the strategic context. This calls for higher emotional quotient for the PMs to adapt continuously to the dynamic market and project needs. It’s also crucial for the PMs to have more stakeholder management skills, whilst the basic project management skills are assumed to be the minimum baseline for any PM. The frequent mergers and acquisitions that have happened over the past decade indicate that PMs occasionally deal with redoing commercial agreements with the new entity, as the old entity doesn’t exist any more. Hence, understanding basic commercial aspects are key to being a successful PM whilst working closely with the vendors and procurement teams. Digital transformation is one of the buzzwords which have gotten tossed around in organisations over the past few years. Any PM who is not comfortable with acquiring knowledge of this space will soon be left behind.
