About the Book

STUCK-OUT includes humor, romance, religion, classroom management and a method for teaching adults to read. The novel defines the culture of prisons for profit, and is a bit of a muckraker. Heroes include teachers, the librarian, the chaplain, and some officers and wardens. STUCK-OUT dramatically shows why education does work in prison, and why drug and alcohol treatment can not.Most inmates in the novel are non-violent, victimless, first offenders who are addicts. The War on Drugs has torn them from their communities, where they might have gotten treatment that works, and has imposed very long sentences on them.Prison professionals will find themselves nodding with recognition as they read the book. Strangers will get a glimpse of prison management through staff meetings, and a feeling for the agony of women in prison through their New Year´s Eve reflections. After a sudden change in personnel, all hell breaks loose, and the reader sees the state emerging as the best manager of prisons. The book concludes that prison work is a most important job.
