About the Book

Valyna, a draconda, or non-flying dragon returns to her lair to find her mate brutally slaughtered, and the eggs of her unborn offspring shattered. She knew, dragon bandits, a group of humans who valued the treasures of the dragons and not their lives could only have done this deed.  Ready to lay down beside her mate and die along with him, she realized looking into his eyes, they had stolen the most precious possession of a dragon – his soul.  Enraged to the point of insanity, Valyna vows to retrieve his soul even if it means killing each of the bandits until she finds it.

Radom on a private mission to free his father from prison in Constantinople meets up with the bandits in an inn where they are looking to replace the only man Valyna’s mate was able to kill.  His careful planning hadn’t been so accurate, and his need of money was desperate.  Time was running out for his father, and he needed to make a lot of money in a very short period of time. Fearful of the jeopardy he was putting his life in; Radom reluctantly joins the marauders, planning only to stay with them until he had enough for his father’s ransom.

Radom and the group of bandits continue their raids, not suspecting they are being followed.  Venturing into the territory of the dracodas or flying dragons, Radom realizes he will never make it out alive unless he gets away from these men.

Valyna is also fearful of dracoda territory, since although the same species, they are not her kind.  Injured, she lay on the bank of a river, and is approached by a Great Red. Having no choice but to trust him, she allows him to heal her wounds, and realizes there is no difference between them, other than the ability to fly.  Morcan, the Great Red sees it differently, he doesn’t understand her need for revenge, even when he finds his mate slaughtered by the humans.

By the time the bandits reach Alba Julia, the monastery of the Salmite monks, reputed dragon slayers, only Radom and one other bandit remains.  Thinking they were safe within its walls, they gave no thought to Valyna, and were surprised when she attacked the compound with the aid of another draconda.

Radom and five monks escape the carnage, and after hearing his story, allow him to accompany them to Constantinople where they plan to ask the Emperor for more men and supplies.

In Constantinople they meet an old exiled Salmite that reveals some secrets about the Order and the Dragons.  He embroils the monks into a conspiracy that puts Radom in the same prison as his father, leaving the monks to attempt a risky rescue to free Radom then escape the city.

Unknown to them as they travel, Valyna recruits Katina, a dracoda, to act as her eyes in the sky, tracking the remaining bandits.  Katina encourages others to help Valyna make a stand against the humans who threaten their existence.  Valyna unexpectedly finds herself leading a dragon army against the pious monks whose mission is to dispel the beasts.  On their return to Alba Julia, Radom and the monks don’t realize what is waiting for them in the surrounding hills.

Katina’s daughter, one of three known shape shifters in the dragon population, infiltrates Alba Julia as a beautiful young woman.  Instantly attracted to her, Radom’s loyalty is now pulled between his love for this woman, and her pleas to stop the imminent battle with the dragons.
