About the Book

An accidental murder sparks Harold's Squad.  Harold, a Harlem youth, unintentionally shoots and kills a member of a troublesome group of young men known as the New Jacks.  The murder was witnessed by one of the New Jacks, and Harold knows that soon he will be the target of their revenge.  Before he deals with them, though, he must lead the police away from the truth, which he does by dumping the body on the streets of the New Jacks' rival, the West Side Posse.

It isn't long before the New Jacks do discover his deed and come after him, and the West Side Posse soon finds out the truth for themselves.  With grim fate closing in on every side, Harold calls upon his exceptional intellect to save him and his "squad," ultimately bowing to a lethal act of desperation.

Detective Hoyt Scope has a personal stake in putting Harold behind bars.  Scope is the target of much finger pointing for his handling of the New Jack’s murder, since it seemed to have allowed a much bloodier sequel.  To him, though, the evidence doesn’t quite add up, and if he can prove that the real perpetrators are actually led by a young man named Harold, he will be vindicated, though convincing anyone else even of that possibility (including his partner, and lieutenant) may be the hardest part of all.

With Harold desperately trying to bury the past, and Scope doggedly attempting to unearth it, they are destined to cross, but Detective Scope does not find Harold the vicious killer he expects, and Harold finds in Scope an unlikely confidante as his life grows more vulnerable by the day.
