About the Book

Short and charming, Joan Sullivan Christensen´s Tales from the Treasure Chest is a delightful summer read. Christensen´s debut work relates the story of three female friends in a Southern California beach town who must deal with life style changes and new relationships. The dual plot centers around the thrift shop that the women manage for charity and on the troubled marriage of Helena, the main character. These plot lines come together as the women struggle to meet the upcoming balloon payment on the thrift shop building and as Helena must decide whether to leave her comfortable life and her husband. While light-hearted and at times tongue in cheek, the novel also manages to deal with the more serious issues of women´s emotional and financial independence and raises questions about racism, aging, and community. Walking nicely the line between playfulness and pragmatism, Treasure Chest is one of those beguiling surprises that come in small packages.
