About the Book

Golfer Jack Wilson had game, maybe even enough to challenge the likes of Trevino, Floyd, even Palmer or the Golden Bear.  But he also liked the esoteric challenges of high-stakes gambling.  How to read your opponent, exploit his or her weakness, and use whatever means necessary to win, even it it’s outside the rules of golf.  The tools of his trade not only included his clubs, but the handgun that he carried in his bag.

Introduced to this twilight world by the tough and suave Bobby del Greco, Jack’s golf career is a lot more than just making birdies. Violence is never far off on the horizon, and after a particularly unfortunate and brutal introduction to the darker side of the lifestyle, Jack knows too well how quickly things can go from good to ugly in a matter of moments.

Golf is a gentleman’s game, but the kind of gentleman in Jack’s world would not endear him to the PGA.  Mentored at young age by the likes of Bullfrog and a tough-as-nails touring pro, Jack quickly learns the ropes under their tutelage.  Using Bobby’s money as his stake, his position is like that of an indentured servant, albeit a high-rolling, luxurious one. Unfortunately, the shadow of Bobby’s mob ties darkens Jack’s life and he resents the hold the powerful criminal holds over him.

Making a stab at the Tour is always in the background, but Jack knows that it won’t be easy to get away from Bobby’s tentacles, or to refine his game to the sharp point necessary for the Tour.  His irascible caddie, Spoon, a shaggy man who claims to be a Scottish native, assists him.  Like a husband and wife, Spoon and Jack develop a strong bond that suffers many ups and downs as they travel the world looking for that next big bet.  Among their adventures is an uproarious match against a top touring professional that ends up in compromising positions for the star.

Eventually, he is able to break away from Bobby, and Jack continues what has now become a familiar lifestyle as a hustler.  His reputation has become so stellar that people seek him out just to say they played and lost to the great Jack Wilson.  He finally decides to break out of this drifting ennui as an aimless hustler with an attempt at the torturous, stress-packed Q-school, which would qualify him for the Tour.

At about the time he reaches this momentous decision, a beautiful female hustler enters his world and turns it upside down.  Wary of her intentions, he finally agrees to a bout against the mysterious woman and eventually teams up with her in a big-time game against a famous actor and a baseball player.  They also team up romantically in a hot and steamy affair that is as wild as their on-course antics.  After their winnings mysteriously disappear while in Las Vegas, the woman momentarily vanishes and Jack is able to concentrate all his energy on Q-school.

At this pivotal point in his life, Bobby returns and the skeletons in Jack’s closet become all too visible.  Will they be enough to ruin Jack’s Tour dreams? Even if he qualifies, will he have to deal with a past that could prevent him from joining the Tour?

The drama in UNPLAYABLE LIES is unending and things are never quite what they seem.
