About the Book

This book, Education in Nigeria: Reflections and Global Perspectives, provides a broad overview of education in Nigeria. It recognizes the vital role education plays in the development of Nigeria and has attempted to air the concerns and call of the Nigerian public as well as educators for reform in the educational system in Nigeria. The book further recognizes that Nigerian education continues to be evolved, first into a system of Western European education and then into a global system of education. It attempts to examine the status of education in Nigeria and thereby seeks solutions by exploring Nigeria’s and global historical perspectives, current trends, and future directions regarding students and learning, teachers and teaching, the school curriculum, and administration of schools. It is expected that the comprehensive nature of the text will be beneficial to individuals in teacher preparation programs as well as those who plan to work with children in pre-kindergarten (nursery) through secondary settings. The chapter content of the book focuses on the variation of thought as to the principal objectives of educators to help students in Nigeria develop habits, skills and ideas, and help them to think. It adds to the importance of providing education to all, especially at the time when Nigeria is frankly making an effort to affirm democracy. For any nation to be truly democratic, it must maintain an educated electorate. Education prepares people to make informed decisions that affect the society. All children in Nigeria should, therefore, receive an education to prepare them to become effective members of the world society. This book seeks to examine and reflect on education in Nigeria and globally.

About the Author

Dr. Daniel Nomishan is a professor of Education at Fitchburg State College. A previous Chair of the Education Department, Co-Chair of the Educational Leadership and Management Programs, and Director of the Summer Bridge Program, Dr. Nomishan holds a B.S. in Science Education, M.S. in Educational Administration and Supervision from Morgan State University, has an earned Doctorate in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with 24 years of experience in classroom teaching. He also holds the Nigerian Certification in Education and the Maryland Professional Certification and has held the position of Assistant Principal and Acting Principal. He also taught general science, mathematics, chemistry, and physics for Baltimore City Public Schools; served as a Visiting Scientist for schools in Dade County, Florida, USA; and was the Florida Atlantic University’s Director of the NASA's Land-Based Space Station, Kennedy Space Center. Dr. Nomishan's work on the state sponsored project, Partnerships Advancing the Learning of Mathematics and Science (PALMS) led to the preparation of mentor teachers for pre-service teachers in the areas of mathematics and science and in the development of Massachusetts's Mathematics and the Science and Technology/Engineering Frameworks. Listed in the Who’s Who in Education in the United States of America, his work in Mathematics and Science Education for at-risk student populations, multicultural education and critical thinking is well known at the national and international arena, including South Africa, Nigeria, Oman, Australia, Canada, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Spain, and China. He actively participates in professional organizations, including National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Science Teachers Association, and International Association of Science and Technology for Development. Presidential Award for Science Nominee in 1983, Dr. Nomishan has been a faculty member at Fitchburg State College since 1991 and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in science and mathematical education, using computers in education, critical thinking, and educational leadership and management.
