About the Book
HELEN ELIZABETH ROBARDS TABER recounts intimate stories which describe what she calls a charmed childhood. She was born December 1916, the fifth child and youngest girl in a family of seven. Nobody ever told her that because she was a girl she couldn’t be or do anything! Under the benevolent guidance of strict idealistic parents, she modeled her ultimate feminine role after three older sisters. Nevertheless, she treasured freedom of unfettered activities invented with two satellite younger brothers. CAREFREE ON A TETHER is the story of Helen’s years from earliest memories through eighth grade. Helen, valedictorian of her high school class at Castle Rock, Washington, graduated with honors from Washington State University in the class of 1939. In 1938 she married her lifetime partner geologist John W. Taber who died in 1997. During their early married years, she discovered that self-sufficiency learned in childhood was helpful for raising two daughters in the privation of mining camp life. Ms Taber describes herself as a sometime volunteer publicist and longtime freelance writer whose lifetime passions have revolved around family and outdoor activities.
