About the Book
There are essentially two ways you can run your life. You can seek a life rich in experience, or you can accumulate things—objects. If you favor the latter, you will place great stock in the material world and acquiring legal tender. If you favor the former, you will place great stock in the spiritual world and acquiring insight. These are two extreme tendencies. There are as many combinations as there are people. As fate would have it, I was wedded to experience. While pursuing a career as an educator, I became enthralled with Outward Bound, the worldwide organization that conducts adventure-based courses, primarily for young adults, in wilderness settings. Putting life and limb at risk, students spend their time mastering outdoor pursuits, within interdependent groups. I started as a student and worked my way up through the ranks to become School Director of the Colorado Outward Bound School. This memoir of my life leading up to and culminating in my Outward Bound leadership experience is arranged episodically. Each episode is timeless and stands on its own. Each depicts the growth, fun and adventure of the Outward Bound participants I had the pleasure of knowing and working alongside.
About the Author
20 years ago, Jerry Golins discovered the Rocky Mountains. He has lived amongst them ever since with his wife, Polly, and his two sons, Matt and Mike. Outward Bound captured his imagination—he found the perfect educational combination of mind and body, ideas and experiences. Beginning as a participant, then advancing through the program, Jerry thoroughly immersed himself and eventually became the school’s director. Presently, Jerry is retired in Salt Lake City, Utah, enjoying the true fruits of an experience-rich life with his family. Together, they are climbing yet another mountain as Jerry battles Parkinson’s disease.
