Carl Lucan and his team from the Mars colony return to Earth orbit to find there are seemingly few survivors. Lured by a distress transmission they come to the survival bunker of world leaders. Faced with the opportunity to escape from Earth, opposing factions wage a futile battle for self-preservation. The Mars team stage a narrow escape from their captors. Returning to the Mars colony they go about their artificially preserved lives much the same as before.

A newcomer to the colony unravels the mystery of an alien artifact previously discovered on the Martian surface and classified as a military secret. It is the key to locating an intelligent spaceship from an ancient alien race which once visited the solar system. Carl and two companions voyage in the spaceship to the constellation Aqulia where the alien civilization is based. It turns out the Aquilan’s experienced the same alien invasion as the Earth, though they coped considerably better. They put their resources at the Mars colonists disposal. The colonists decide to migrate to the Aquilan world when the political turmoil experienced on Earth revisits them.
