About the Book

This is a collection of love letters written between 1890-1891 between a young woman in Colorado who is “proving” a homestead and her fiancée who is attending Vanderbilt University. They reflect two different worlds: a very rural Colorado recently opened for settlement, and the much more sophisticated life at Vanderbilt and in Nashville, Tennessee. They incidentally chronicle some of the rapid change occurring, particularly in “the west,” as the railroads make travel comfortable and convenient and correspondence more timely.
