About the Book

Neli Moody’s first published collection, After Altamira, is gathered from her most recent work, completed during the past year. A teacher at San Jose State University and the recipient of many honors, including the James Phelan Award for poetry and the Academy of American Poets’ Virginia Araujo Award, her poems weave a tapestry of histories and places, of civilization and the wonders of nature and reveal a delight in language, whether the words are drawn from the classical world or newly made.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“After Altamira’ s poems are carved out of a shimmering crystalline language . . . ”
—Alan Soldofsky, author of Kenora Station and Staying Home

“ . . . an impressive debut [After Altamira’ s] sinuous poems bring us closer to the elements they encircle and embrace: grass, fl int, clay, the bestial and beautiful, the mythic and real— mountains, skies, stars, and plains . . . .”
—Paul Douglass, author of Lady Caroline Lamb: A Biography

“Through her rich language . . . roiling, pulsing rhythms and vivid particulars, Neli Moody reveals the great heart of the beast . . . [She] marks her lineage and takes her place in the ongoing creation.”
—Len Anderson, author of Affection for the Unknowable
