About the Book

Trying to make this thing Right begins in New York City where Ka Shawn and his older brother are abandoned by both parents one year apart. These are the first of many struggles in Ka Shawn’s young life. He lives in a high rise project with his grandmother who has a strong will and parenting skills and despite the horror that surrounds her life inside she stays strong and exists with her radio one good friend and knowledge of self in good stead. Every one abandons her Ka Shawn’s brother to jail and once Ka Shawn grows tall he is taken to an all white prep school where is accepted and admired as a basketball star. The transition from an all black world to an all white world is rough at first and then easy until the bottom falls out. Ka Shawn does make it to college to play ball and there the transition is even harder. This is a story about the discovery of self despite many obstacles. The book is rich with African American history and strong characters. It exposes the corruption of big time sports and although it is a fictional account it also can be considered historical fiction because it correlates with events that happened during John Calipari’s tenure at the University of Massachusetts. These events are already in the public domain. Reader’s journalists and historians will have to make the connections and come to their own conclusions.
