About the Book
(excerpted from the Intro) …my mother revealed to me that my father also wrote poetry. I was stunned. The man was John Wayne to me. It is a bit jarring to one’s equilibrium to picture John Wayne getting off his horse and reciting Byron. I asked my mother to dig up all of the poems she could find (one was written in a Valentine’s Day card from 1950). The most wonderful thing started happening as I read my dad’s poetry – I began seeing my father as a man – not just as my dad. And as I compared our poetry, I found myself comparing experiences and perspectives and philosophies and joys and pains and laughter… In my eyes, we became more than just “father” and “son.” Looking at my father I saw a man who had been a mischievous boy like me at one time, a guy who has wrestled with many of the same issues as I have, a mortal just trying to do the best with what he’s been given. We became, and remain, the closest of friends…
