They Built a Flying Saucer is a story of a man that became involved with the Tombstone Vigilantes. Drinking and smoking became worse during that time in his life until he resigned from the bank where he had worked for approximately four years. He then returned to St Louis, the city where he had been raised. But after his return the drinking continued until voices began to speak directly to his brain. He imagined that he had developed a Flying Saucer and told an owner of a small grocery store across the street from where he lived.
His life became more confused until he realized he needed help. He was asked if he wanted to go to the hospital. He said, "No, I want to go to a church." From that time on, step by step, he began to receive spiritual help. He finally made it all the way back to reality.
