About the Book

This collection comprises memoirs, poems, and short stories largely based on the author's experiences. Her memoirs offer loving impressions of her grandmothers, told through her eyes as a small girl. The poems reflect on her first love, in San Jose, and on late-night wakefulness in Manhattan.   The short stories glimpse experiences, both true and imagined, of a young single woman in New York City. They empathetically and humorously detail the woman's coming to grips with the shell game, with cashiering at a 24-hour diner, with apartment robbery, with subway mugging, with being fired, with being swindled, and with the lingering trauma of rape. Additionally, there is a portrait of a teenage girl at an arts camp with her first boyfriend. There is one of a young woman seeking salvation, after being dumped by her boyfriend, through New Age seminars in Manhattan. And there is an enchanting conversation between a young woman and an elderly one, strangers to each other, on a Central Park bench.

About the Author

Kyle Kevorkian teaches and plays piano in New York City, and writes songs, stories and poems. She has a master's degree in music from Rutgers' Mason Gross School of the Arts, where her piano teacher helped her to hone her classical chops. She's now working toward a recital program that will feature works by Mozart, Chopin, Bartok and Beethoven. Born and raised in the Jersey suburbs, she went to the Bay Area after college to be an editor at Keyboard Magazine and write about classical and jazz pianists. She has since moved to NYC. She has had the New York experiences of being mugged, robbed, and swindled, of wanting to learn things off the beaten track, and of having wonderfully memorable grandmothers--all detailed in this story collection.
