About the Book

Tzin

A Novel of Ancient Mexico

by Charles Lakin

The concluding volume of the 'Tzin trilogy finds Nunya returned to Anahuac. In Tollan, he tries to pick up the threads of his old life, but Xilonen has pursued her own destiny. She has become a high priestess, sworn to celibacy, as is the king. Nunya also learns that the two of them are deeply in love, and always have been. Their feelings had always been kept suppressed by Xilonen's love for Nunya, and Topiltzin's great respect for him. In his absence, this love has deepened but remains unexpressed.

Unsure of what to do with his life, Nunya decides to depart from Tollan after giving the two closest people in his life a precious gift: the opportunity to realize their love with his assistance and blessing. But Topiltzin's romantic indiscretion is immediately discovered by his enemies, most notably Ixtilton. This grotesque little man uses the affair to destroy the delicate peace that the king has fashioned, and to overthrow him. Tollan literally rips itself apart over the incident, which appears to cause Topiltzin's death and the permanent destruction of a part of the capital.
