About the Book

Robert Owen of New Lanark, Scotland, was a giant figure of the Industrial Revolution. He made a fortune in the cotton spinning business—turning cotton fibers into thread for the weaving of cloth. But his rags-to-riches story is only a small part of this incredible story. Robert Owen was also one of the most well known humanitarians of his day.

At a time when most industrialists considered human beings as little more than fodder for their powerful machinery, Robert Owen thought profit and humanity were compatible. He eliminated child labor, reduced working hours, and made his factory a safe, healthy, and clean place to work. He built schools for his workers and their children and was one of the most innovative educational leaders of his day. In fact, he invented kindergarten, or perhaps what we would today call “fast-track” daycare.

At an early age, Robert Owen dedicated himself to eliminating the suffering and misery of the human race, a quest he maintained until his death in 1858 at age 87. Owen made a fortune as a cotton spinner, yet he died penniless, having sacrificed his fortune in a quest to improve the lives of every man, woman, and child of the human race.

The Utopian Prince is a story that even today contains valuable lessons about the way we live and work together as human beings. Owen was at least a hundred years—maybe two hundred years ahead of his time.
