About the Author

Juan Manuel Pérez obtained his B.A. in history from Loyola College in Baltimore, MD and his M.A. and Ph. D. in Latin American History from Georgetown University, Washington, DC. He works as a senior reference librarian in the Hispanic Division, at the Library of Congress. He is currently engaged in the preparation of a book on Galician workers in the construction of the Panama Canal, to be published in Spain by the Pedro Barrié de la Maza Foundation. He has just been knighted by the king of Spain, with the title of Knight Commander of the Order of Queen Isabella (one of Spain's oldest and most prestigious awards), for his ceaseless efforts in preserving Hispanic culture.
