About the Book
Out in The 50’s, married in the 60’s, divorced in the 90’s, and out again thereafter, I recount here my life from early childhood to the present. The focus of the book is summarized by its title and subtitle: i.e., the difference between being queer in the 50’s and 60’s, and being queer now; between having no community and at last having one; between pretending perforce to be someone other than myself (I am and have never denied to myself that I am 100% gay), and finally being out to all the world. Thus, despite the pain I record, my autobiography has a happy ending. My life is typical of many gay men of my generation and my recounting of it perhaps will be helpful to young gay men who, even now in 2006, are struggling with their homosexuality.
