About the Author

Kiyana Jackson was born 1979 in Seattle, Washington. She is the youngest of five children and the mother of a seven-year-old daughter named Kayla Monae. She started writing poetry and short stories when she was fourteen years old and in the eighth grade. Kiyana’s early writing included short series stories called “The Loveable Babysitters,” which was her version of The Baby-Sitters Club. Kiyana wrote her first long story titled “Pearls on the Shore” when she was fifteen. In Kiyana’s sophomore year in high school, she formed and became the leader of the Creative Writing Club at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, Washington. Kiyana submitted her first poem “Hear Her Cry” to the International Poetry Contest in 2001, where it was published in the Immortal Verses Series and The Sound of Poetry collection on compact disc and cassette. She also has received a Wall of Tolerance certificate from the cochairmen Morris Dees and Rosa Parks from the National Campaign for Tolerance, where her name was placed on the Wall of Tolerance in November of 2002. Kiyana had always dreamt of publishing her own book. The Beginning of Dreams is Kiyana’s very first book published.
