About the Author

John Wallace Etheredge is a Texas country boy who grew up along the Trinty River in East Texas in the 1920's, where he and his two brothers and two sisters helped their parents farm river bottom land. When widespread flooding wiped them out, they were forced to live in Houston, Weldon and Crockett. When the Great Depression hit, life became even harder for the Etheredge family. They depended on hunting and fishing in their East Texas woods to help feed the many mouths at their table. They often took in orphans who had no where else to go. John, who was a college student in Huntsville, left Texas and joined the Army Air Corp when World War II broke out. This true story chronicles life in the Army Air Corp on the West Coast during World War II. John’s training required him to fly across the Southwest of the United States, from San Diego, Phoenix, El Paso and back. Radar was a new tool and sometimes it resulted in amusing mistakes. The entire air defense of the San Diego to Los Angeles area was under John’s watchful eye. He often spent days on the job without ever leaving. This is a story of one man’s hard fought battle with life and the challenges it has to offer. John wrote this book to capture his now fading memories of his life with his parents, their parents and siblings. This book is a gift to his eight children and recounts his last ninety years.
