About the Book

The violent coup that toppled Chilean president Salvador Allende in 1973 serves as the backdrop for this dramatic story about the experiences of a rookie CIA offi cer. Having just graduated from Yale, his ability to speak Spanish lands him in the capital of Chile just weeks before the revolution. His adventures there lead him to wrestle with ethical questions involving America’s clandestine role in the destabilization of the Chilean government. When a kindly fl ower merchant and his wife are captured by military forces during the attack on the presidential palace, the young offi cer must make a diffi cult and dangerous decision that could change their lives forever.

About the Author

Jack Sobel lives in Florida. His interest in politics led him to research another September 11th---the one in 1973 when a military junta in Chile, allegedly with the support of the American CIA, swept a democratically elected president out of offi ce. Several authoritative accounts were published and more was made public during the Senate hearings that followed the coup. Against that background, he crafted this uplifting story of the American dream. So while his goal was to create an entertaining and enjoyable fi ction and he took generous license with the facts, the book necessarily includes more than a little honest-to-goodness history and touches on national security issues still on people’s minds today as they debate laws like the American Patriot Act.
