About the Book

This book is dedicated to the survivors and the souls that were lost in the floods of New Orleans. We just love y'all and we will not stop until we raise New Orleans to the top.

Born Ricky Eugene Jones, September 14, 1958, Drake Eugene Jones is my writer's name, which is; a collaboration of my mother's and father's names. I was born and educated in Raleigh, North Carolina the fourth of six siblings. I started writing poems at a very early age. It was not until my first year in college that I decided on my style. I like to write when I am both happy and mentally challenged. I try to catch all of my emotions. Most of all I like to write about other people and their facets of life in a real serious but sarcastic way. I believe laughter in any situation is good for the human soul.

In 1975 the fall of my senior year at Broughton High School I heard a song called The Mother Ship Connection on our school radio in the cafeteria and I was like man who is those guys? The lyrics were so powerful. I later found out that they were Parliament/Funkadelic and George Clinton was the voice. In 1976 the fall of my freshman year at N.C. A&T.S.U., I went to one their concerts. The greatest thrill that I have ever had in my life was seeing the landing of the Mother Ship and Clinton arouse as Dr. Funkenstein. He had come to earth to rescue his people from the constipated notions (shitty ideas) of the placebo syndrome (pre-establishment). At that moment it was as if the world had stopped and that all people of every race that came to the concert stood as one. For our Savior had arrived. That was really breath taking. Picture this for fantasy is reality. I knew then that I wanted to write like Clinton with each of my poems being breathe taking to someone. In my collection, I have written a tribulation to Mr. Clinton in a poem that I call “Chocolate Child / Me and Da Boys." He is my inspiration. For it does not have to be done like this - it can also be done like that. Thank you Mr. Clinton you will forever be an unending story.

I have never been published before but my poem "Living on the Block" won an educational award from a local radio station WLLE that is no longer in service.

I have been invited to speak at-several poetry jams at several radio stations in Wilmington, NC to recite my poems "Pleads in Silence" and "Changes".

My poems "Sealed with a Kiss". "I'll Cry Your Tears" and "Why" has been used on several funeral programs.
