About the Book

Once this country’s largest and most successful corporation, General Motors has now fallen into bankruptcy. Back in the 1950s, during its heyday, Richard Underwood and his family knew and worked with some of the General Motors top executives. Underwood worked at GM Central Office and at Chevrolet Central Office in Detroit, Michigan. The author combines his inside observer’s view of its rise and historic fall with a brief memoir of his life both before and after working at the corporation.

About the Author

Following his graduation from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and service in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in Germany, the author worked for five years at General Motors Corporation. After his novel was published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston in 1963, Underwood and his wife lived in Europe. He returned to the University of Michigan for his doctorate in English literature and began university teaching in South Carolina in 1970. His noted Shakespeare scholarship resulted in three books published. Underwood was also a professional jazz piano musician. He lives with his wife of forty-seven years on a lake in South Carolina. Both are retired from long university careers.
