About the Book

In this sometimes solemn, sometimes whimsical story of life in the bush, Jim Jasken allows us to follow on a magical journey through his beloved Sugarbush country. Woven into the tales and poems, this masterful story teller takes us from mystical native lore to the canny pragmatism of the decedents of a hardy people who settled amid the pine forests. Perhaps the most moving quality of this book is Jasken's gentle, non-judgmental approach to his characters, be they two-legged, winged or four-legged--all capable of folly and frippery; none of them condemned for being what they are. This is a truly good read.

About the Author

Jim’s essays, poetry and short stories highlight unique ways to view issues and explore the provincial Minnesota personality. Minnesota countryside, characters and traditional values under-gird his work. He was born on the Minnesota White Earth Indian Reservation of European ancestry. His parents were farmers - his friends, native and white alike. Nearly 50% of his classmates dropped out of school before high school graduation in 1960. About 10% headed off to college. Many died young. His career began with twenty years in the English classroom. He then spent 25 years as proprietor of a nationally known museum/collector service, specializing primarily in investment-quality firearms and frontier goods. His interests remain the American Fur Trade, early exploration, and eighteenth century American politics. His fortunate path has led him to walk with the very wealthy, the highly educated; and the poorest and most destitute of Minnesotans. Many of Jim’s best friends are the best philosophers. Many never left the REZ. “Location” is for a real estate agent, what “perspective” is to a writer. Jim has been blessed. Mary Ann and Jim retired to Big Sugar Bush Lake (Becker County, MN), where local life has changed little since they left in the 1960’s. They winter in Arizona. His writing will do his talking. sugarbushwordshop@hotmail.com
