About the Author

One year after the end of the second world war, Hildegard Gertrud Josefa Brothers was born into a world full of ruins; into a world that was just starting to rebuild itself. Hitler’s 1000-year Reich had lasted not even full 12 years when it collapsed. Those who had survived Hitler’s regime and the war, were now pulling up their sleeves and beginning to create a new, democratic, free Germany. At the age of three, her mother moved with her to the place where her memories start: a small country town in the very northwestern part of Germany, only a few miles away from the Dutch border. During her life she lived in several areas of Germany, north and south, until in 2003 she left it all behind and moved to the United States, where she found a new home. She now lives near Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, together with her husband Tom and her dog Sammy.
