In May 1873, the State Legislature issued a Joint Resolution citing the grateful thanks of the citizens of Texas to Gen. Ranald Mackenzie and the US Fourth Cavalry. Will McGovern tells the story behind that historic event. Lieutenant Will McGovern resigned his commission after endless Army pursuits when Indians on vengeance raids into Texas escaped across the Rio Grande. When his Uvalde ranch is attacked, Col. Mackenzie queries the West Point graduate, “Want to hunt Indians with me?” Will finally crosses that river into Mexico with the Fourth, but discovers the real “Indian threat’ and solves a seven-year mystery.

About the Author

Fran Gilliland, artist, writer, and avid history buff, lives in South Texas. A relentless researcher for page and canvas, she draws from a wellspring of inspiration for writing from frontier pioneers she was privileged to know…her great-grandmother who homesteaded as a bride in 1880 Texas, her grandmother who ranched with her husband in the 1912 Texas Panhandle, and her mother who traipsed her great-uncle’s ranch in Indian Territory, Oklahoma, part of which Fran inherited.
