About the Book

When the Nazis invade Poland, a small boy and his widowed mother flee through Europe to Baghdad, where the boy´s uncle is the royal doctor and his aunt a glittering participant in Baghdad´s high society. He becomes a playmate of the young king, eats off gold and learns Arabic. Sent to a boarding school in Egypt, he befriends street boys and learns knife fighting. On his mother´s remarriage to an Englishman, the boy, now a teenager, is packed off to an English public school, to a new name, a new language and a stint of National Service; a road that will eventually lead him to Cambridge University.
