About the Book
Written for “United Statesers” who do not know know Puerto Rico and its people, or what they have experienced under our rule since 1898. A long, sad, oh-so-human story. It deals with the wistful hope that somehow, by some miracle, English-language business and industry and English-language power will not overwhelm and destroy their Spanish language, their culture, and all else unique that is the essence of being Puerto Rican. The title, Beautiful, Blessed, Benighted Puerto Rico, came easily. The land, although ravaged in some places, is a lush, tropical, lovel tempered paradise. In Spanish I have always heard it called—and called it—”la isla bendita,” the blessed isle. The choice of “benighted” will be plain to those who read these pages.
