She is timeless. Judith Farrell has captured—in novel form—distinct and fascinating characters from Middle America—each with his or her own tale to spin. Her characters are like vessels that pass in the night, taking harbor in this collection if only for a moment. ´She´ is the otherwise unnamed protagonist with a mission to conjure and highlight some personalities who likely will leave this world with no other epitaph than having been a figment of her imagination. Judith writes: “When I was a young girl, my father taught some peculiar rules—peculiar for me, maybe not so for others who follow strict etiquette. He believed that the imperfect pronoun ‘she’ was not designed for my mother or any woman for that matter. For instance, he sometimes asked ‘What did your mother tell you to do?’ I sometimes replied, ‘She told me to sweep the kitchen floor.’ His reaction to my error was to issue a stern warning, sometimes emphasized with the palm of his hand across my butt. ‘Your mother is not She,’ he firmly declared without a smitch of room for debate. “I have always thought ‘she’ a beautiful term. I aspire to be worthy of the pronoun. It’s not an easy thing to accomplish. I guess my father made an impression on me, though I suspect it’s not the one he intended.”
