About the Book

If we don’t know where we’ve been we will not know where we’re going. Notes From The Whirlwind is a semi-autobiographical review of the changes, conflicts and challenges that have occurred in the nation, the culture and the larger Christian community, from the perspective of the varied ministries of a Presbyterian pastor. Will the mainline churches continue to decline in a society that indulges itself with entertainment and a vague spirituality that focuses on the “me” and the “I”? Will the the church, the culture and the nation ever resolve the dilemma of guns, violence, war, racism, and the divisive conflicts stemming from their failure to understand human sexuality?

The “Notes” include the significant events and circumstances that confronted one Presbyterian pastor as he sought to understand how to be a pastor, preacher, priest, and prophet over the span of nearly fifty years. Perhaps if we can learn from our history, personal and professional, the future may not only be different but better. We may hear the voice from out of the whirlwind as the prophets Nahum and Job did, reminding us that “his way is in whirlwind and storm and the clouds are the dust of his feet.” We will not know where we need to go, however, if we do not know where we’ve been.
