About the Book

The Adventures of Drama Dog and Larry Cat is the initial story of a 4 book series and introduces these delightful characters to young readers. In this tale, Larry Cat exhibits a reluctance to try new foods. Drama Dog, with her usual calming and rationale appeal, convinces Larry Cat that trying new foods can be a good thing.

This story was inspired by the author´s visit to a juvenille eating disorders clinic. Her description of the event is chilling:

"When I was pregnant with my first child, I went to have lunch with a phychologist friend of mine who works in an eating disorders clinic for children. At the time, I was 7 months pregnant and I just could not understand the need for such a large clinic to help address eating disorders in children. Kids eat everything don’t they? Isn’t there an old saying that “my kids are eating me out of house and home?” Could there possibly be so many children with bulimia and anorexia?!!"

Then I walked into the clinic.

By chance, my friend saw me through the reception window and told me she would be out in a few minutes and she asked me to have a seat. Feeling the weight of my pregnancy, I gladly obliged and sat next to an adorable red-haired child flashing a smile that would light up a room. This gregarious little red-headed girl began a conversation with me and told me her life story in 10 minutes! I was amazed at the maturity and depth this young girl had and I shared those sentiments with her mother who was sitting next to her. The child looked at me with my large stomach and asked me if I was there to get help for eating too much. I giggled and told her that I was going to have a baby and I was supposed to have a big tummy. The little girl looked at me and replied: “If I was that fat I would kill myself.”

This child was 4 years old.

Her mother looked at me apologetically and I nodded at her that I understood her dilemma. I understood why she was there and why this beautiful child was sitting at the clinic. What I could not understand was how society puts so much pressure on our precious children to be so weight conscious and thin minded when one size does not fit all.

A few months after my daughter was born, the image of that little red-headed girl stuck in my mind. I didn’t want my child to feel the pressure the media puts on children, specifically, young girls, to be pencil thin. I became proactive and wrote “The Adventures of Drama Dog and Larry Cat.” This story focuses young readers on trying new foods and eating well. More importantly, I wanted to give parents a book to initiate a dialogue about healthy eating habits. At a time where bulimia and anorexia rates are at an all time high, I wanted kids to read this book and walk away feeling that eating is a safe, healthy and natural part of normal development. Trying new foods should be an exciting experience for all and we need to start instilling this enthusiasm in our kids at an early age.
